Ten factions offer sharply different starting positions, from Viking-led Northumbria and the Norse-Gaels to the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, Welsh realms, and Irish clans.

Campaign turns revolve around securing provinces, raising armies, managing food and public order, negotiating treaties, and deciding which enemies deserve immediate attention. Battles play out in the series’ familiar real-time format, where shield walls, spear formations, cavalry flanking moves, missile fire, terrain, fatigue, and morale determine whether a force holds or collapses. Recruitment is more deliberate than in many Total War entries, with troops drawing from limited manpower pools and stronger units requiring time to replenish, so reckless losses matter. Kings, heirs, generals, governors, technologies, and faction-specific events all shape a realm’s direction, while victory can involve far more than simply painting the map one color.

Its strongest feature is the focused setting: the map feels smaller than a mainline Total War campaign, but its provinces, coastlines, and competing cultures make every border meaningful. Distinct faction mechanics give campaigns different rhythms, whether players lean into Viking seafaring and raiding, Anglo-Saxon administration, or the internal rivalries of Gaelic leadership. The late campaign pushes growing kingdoms to prove they can survive a major political and military reckoning rather than merely coast after early expansion. Players who enjoy Rome II or Attila but want a more intimate, historically grounded campaign will find plenty to like, especially if they value campaign decisions and faction flavor over enormous unit rosters.
