A Vampyre Story (GOG)

Gothic fairy-tale comedy drives this traditional adventure through the miserable villages, forests, and castles of Draxsylvania. Mona De Lafitte is an aspiring Parisian opera star whose career takes an inconvenient turn when Baron Shrowdy turns her into a vampire and keeps her imprisoned far from home. With the Baron missing, Mona escapes alongside Froderick, her sarcastic bat companion, and sets out to reach Paris before her strange new existence closes in around her. The mood balances old monster-movie gloom with broad cartoon humor, giving the adventure a playful edge rather than leaning into horror.

Play unfolds through familiar point-and-click adventure routines: inspect elaborate scenes, collect odd objects, speak with eccentric locals, and combine clues to solve inventory-based puzzles. Mona’s vampiric condition is more than a story device, as her ability to transform into a bat opens access to new routes and solutions, while sunlight and other supernatural limitations shape where she can go. Conversations carry much of the game’s personality, with Froderick regularly chiming in as both companion and comic foil. Progress is largely linear, built around carefully arranged puzzle chains, so players should expect to think through character motives and environmental details instead of relying on reflexes or combat.

Hand-painted 2D backdrops and a layered moving-camera presentation give each of the game’s many locations the depth of an animated storybook. Its strongest quality is Mona herself: she is vain, talented, frustrated, and surprisingly sympathetic, making her escape more engaging than a standard “save the kingdom” quest. The writing and visual style evoke the golden-age sensibilities of Monkey Island, The Curse of Monkey Island, and other LucasArts-style adventures, especially fitting given creator Bill Tiller’s background in that tradition. A Vampyre Story suits players who enjoy dialogue-heavy classics, humorous gothic settings, and deliberate puzzles, though anyone seeking a complete long-running saga should know its intended follow-up remains unresolved.
