Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma

Kuma’s revenge unfolds as a grim, low-budget hack-and-slash adventure built around one of the more unusual antiheroes in anime-inspired games: a cybernetic bear with a grudge. Set in the same blood-soaked universe as the original Afro Samurai, the story shifts focus away from Afro and follows Kuma through a series of flashbacks and vengeance-driven encounters. Its cel-shaded look aims for the exaggerated comic-book violence and hip-hop-infused attitude of the source material, but the atmosphere never receives the polish or confidence that made the first game memorable. Rather than a triumphant sequel, Revenge of Kuma feels like an unfinished side story released before its ideas, presentation, and technical foundation are ready.

Combat revolves around basic melee attacks, light and heavy combos, blocking, dodging, and occasional special moves as Kuma cuts through groups of enemies in compact arena-like stages. Progression is extremely limited, with fights, sparse traversal, and short narrative scenes repeating in a rigid sequence instead of opening into meaningful exploration or customization. Controls often feel sluggish and imprecise, enemies offer little tactical variety, and the camera struggles to frame crowded encounters, making even routine battles frustrating. The release represents only the first planned installment of an episodic sequel, so its story ends abruptly and its systems never develop beyond a rough early-game framework.

What stands out most is its notoriety: the game is removed from sale shortly after launch and customers receive refunds, an unusually public acknowledgement that the product is not in acceptable condition. Glitches, weak animation, inconsistent sound work, unstable performance, and a severely short runtime undermine the stylish premise at nearly every turn. Players seeking the sharp, violent character-action energy of Afro Samurai are far better served by the 2009 original, while fans of games such as Ninja Gaiden, Bayonetta, or Metal Gear Rising will find none of their mechanical depth here. Revenge of Kuma is mainly a curiosity for collectors of troubled releases or dedicated Afro Samurai completists, not a recommendation for newcomers or genre veterans.
