AI: The Somnium Files

A mutilated body on a rain-soaked carousel launches a neo-noir murder mystery that refuses to stay in the real world. Near-future Tokyo becomes the hunting ground for Kaname Date, a Metropolitan Police detective with a cybernetic left eye and a deeply personal connection to the case. His investigation follows the trail of a serial killer who removes victims’ eyes, mixing gruesome crime-scene drama with deadpan comedy, anime melodrama, and frequent tonal swerves. The result is a stylish, character-driven adventure where every witness may be hiding something far stranger than a conventional lie.

Date splits his work between examining real locations, questioning suspects, and entering their subconscious through the Psync machine. Inside these dreamscapes, his AI partner Aiba takes physical form and navigates surreal puzzle worlds built from memories, fears, contradictions, and absurd visual metaphors. Each Somnium sequence runs on a six-minute clock, so actions consume precious time and force players to experiment with objects, dialogue choices, and temporary time-saving bonuses. Decisions made in dreams open radically different routes through the story, revealing new motives, victims, and perspectives until the larger conspiracy comes into focus.

Kotaro Uchikoshi’s writing gives the game the same appetite for branching timelines and escalating twists that makes Zero Escape memorable, though the emphasis here is on investigation and relationships rather than escape-room logic. Yusuke Kozaki’s sharp character designs, neon cityscapes, and deliberately bizarre dream imagery make even routine conversations visually distinctive, while Aiba’s sarcastic commentary prevents the grim material from becoming relentlessly bleak. Some dream solutions operate on dream logic and the lengthy dialogue-heavy structure asks for patience, but the payoff is a mystery that rewards following every route. Fans of Zero Escape, Danganronpa, Phoenix Wright, or story-first visual novels find plenty to enjoy, and newcomers can comfortably start here if they want a smart thriller with an unconventional puzzle system.
