Players begin in a hangar and assemble ships block by block, selecting hull pieces, weapons, engines, storage, and mobility systems from a large catalogue of components. Propellers can lift a craft into the air, while wheels, tracks, legs, and stranger options allow designs that cross land or water; gathering materials through mining, looting, and contracts funds stronger builds. The Archipelago provides jobs such as hauling cargo, tracking valuable targets, attacking hostile facilities, and challenging enormous roaming threats. Fights demand awareness of weak points because engines, guns, and vital ship systems can all be destroyed independently, forcing crews to repair under fire, change tactics, or board enemies with hand weapons and explosives.

What separates Airmen from more structured vehicle combat games is the freedom to create both the machine and the role it serves. A ship can be a solo scout, a heavily armed gun platform, a mobile workshop, or a shared co-op project where friends steer, operate turrets, manage repairs, and leap aboard rival vessels. Reputation progression, cosmetic unlocks, faction work, and Workshop ship sharing give players reasons to keep experimenting after the first successful build.
