A scorched Victorian fairy tale turns Lewis Carroll’s Wonderland into a hostile reflection of grief, guilt, and psychological collapse. Alice awakens after years in Rutledge Asylum and returns to a realm once filled with nonsense and color, now warped into a bleak nightmare ruled by the Queen of Hearts. The result is an early 2000s action-platformer with a macabre personality: bloodied playing cards, skeletal chess pieces, corrupted storybook characters, and an unnerving industrial soundtrack replace the familiar whimsy. Its horror comes less from jump scares than from the constant sense that Wonderland is decaying alongside its heroine’s mind.

Play revolves around navigating large, linear fantasy levels, making tricky jumps across dangerous platforms, finding hidden routes, and fighting enemies in real-time third-person combat. Alice begins with her signature Vorpal Blade and gradually acquires an inventive arsenal, including explosive Jackbombs, a powerful croquet mallet, card projectiles, and the devastating Ice Wand. Each weapon suits different opponents and uses a shared willpower meter, so combat rewards switching tools instead of relying on one attack. Floating Metroid-inspired save devices, collectible memories, light environmental puzzles, and occasional boss battles break up the platforming, although the camera and precision jumps show their age.

American McGee’s Alice stands apart because it commits fully to its grotesque reinterpretation of a literary classic rather than treating darkness as a superficial coat of paint. American McGee’s art direction gives every area a distinct identity, from fungal forests and warped tea parties to a fortress built around chessboard warfare, while the soundtrack creates a strangely mournful atmosphere. Its controls and old-school level design can feel rough beside modern action games, but the imagination behind the world remains striking. Fans of Alice: Madness Returns, gothic horror, and cult classics such as Clive Barker’s Undying should find plenty to admire, while newcomers should approach it as an influential, challenging relic rather than a polished modern platformer.
