Apidya’ Special (v1.1)

A tiny armed bee turns a familiar side-scrolling shooter into something far stranger and more charming than its insect-sized premise suggests. Apidya’ Special revives a cult 1992 computer shooter with a ground-up pixel-art remake that preserves its eccentric biological settings, from sunny meadows and ponds to sewers, cybernetic territory, and a hostile lair. The tone is colorful and playful on the surface, yet the action is demanding, crowded, and often gleefully bizarre. It is a score-chasing arcade shoot ’em up built for players who enjoy learning enemy patterns as much as they enjoy pure screen-clearing spectacle.

Players guide the bee through horizontally scrolling stages, blasting swarms of insects, environmental hazards, and large end-stage bosses while collecting upgrades for increasingly destructive firepower. The familiar shoot ’em up rhythm of dodging bullets, positioning carefully, grabbing power-ups, and surviving dense formations drives every level, but hidden routes and special stages add reasons to replay. Five themed worlds contain multiple levels and roughly twenty bosses, while randomized occurrences such as Night Mode alter the presentation and enemy appearances enough to keep runs from feeling completely fixed. Local co-op lets a second player control a support drone, offering assistance without turning the screen into an unreadable mess, and adjustable difficulty settings make the notoriously old-school challenge less forbidding.

Its biggest strength is the care taken to respect the original rather than merely place it inside an emulator. Players can swap between a modern widescreen view with added parallax depth and a faithful 4:3 presentation, then layer CRT scanlines, bloom, and shadow-mask effects over either option. Chris Hülsbeck’s newly recorded versions of the celebrated soundtrack give the action a richer sound without losing its Amiga-era identity. Fans of R-Type, Gradius, and classic European home-computer shooters will find a polished nostalgia trip here, while newcomers get a welcoming route into a distinctive, demanding slice of arcade history.
