Olympus is dying, its gods have abandoned humanity, and one mortal warrior answers with a spear, a shield, and a grudge strong enough to challenge heaven. Apotheon is a punishing 2D action-platformer built around Greek myth, casting you as Nikandreos on a climb through the domains of the Olympians. Its world resembles a living black-figure vase painting, with terracotta figures and ornate scenery turned into violent, animated combat arenas. The mood is heroic but harsh: every godly sanctuary feels beautiful, hostile, and worth conquering.

Combat favors caution, timing, and making the most of whatever bronze-age equipment you can carry. Nikandreos fights with swords, axes, spears, bows, thrown weapons, and shields, while enemies demand blocks, evasive movement, careful spacing, and an eye on weapon condition. The interconnected route across Mount Olympus encourages detours through areas tied to Artemis, Apollo, Dionysus, and other gods, where hidden gear, healing supplies, myths, and dangerous creatures reward thorough exploration. Encounters range from ordinary soldiers and beasts to memorable boss fights, and the challenge can feel severe when resources run low or a favored weapon breaks at the wrong moment. Alongside the solo campaign, local one-on-one matches let two players test the same weighty combat system against each other.

What separates Apotheon from most side-scrolling action games is its commitment to the source material. Characters, locations, collectible writings, and even the visual language draw heavily from ancient Greek art and literature without treating mythology as mere background decoration. The hand-drawn presentation remains its greatest strength, giving each cave, temple, and battlefield a look unlike anything in the genre, while the open-ended structure adds a light Metroidvania flavor rather than forcing a straight path.
