Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura

A wounded survivor falls from a burning zeppelin into a fantasy nation being transformed by railroads, firearms, and smoke-belching industry. Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura is an old-school computer RPG where ancient sorcery and the machine age actively clash, not merely coexist as decoration. Its world moves from elegant elven ruins and grimy mining towns to enormous cities full of class conflict, strange conspiracies, and sharply written characters. The mood is dense, sometimes funny, and often surprisingly bleak, with the freedom to play a noble diplomat, murderous thief, gadget-obsessed inventor, or unstable spellcaster.

Character building is the heart of the experience. Rather than locking players into rigid classes, Arcanum lets them invest points in attributes, social and practical skills, magical disciplines, or technical fields such as explosives, firearms, chemistry, and mechanical devices. Quests regularly support combat, persuasion, stealth, bribery, theft, or simply finding an unexpected solution, while companions react to your choices and can fill gaps in a specialized build. Battles can run in real time or switch to turn-based tactics, though the latter generally gives more control during difficult encounters. Magic and technology also interfere with each other, so a heavily mechanized hero struggles with spells while powerful mages find advanced equipment less reliable.

What still separates Arcanum from most RPGs is how thoroughly it commits to its setting’s central tension: progress brings new opportunities, but it also uproots cultures and leaves people behind. The writing, branching quests, and enormous range of viable character concepts give it replay value that rivals Fallout and Baldur’s Gate-era classics, even if its combat balance and interface show their age. Expect a slower pace, plenty of reading, and occasional rough edges rather than modern convenience. Players who enjoy Fallout’s reactive role-playing, Planescape: Torment’s dialogue, or steampunk fantasy with genuine player agency find an exceptional cult classic here; newcomers should use community patches and approach it with patience.
