Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: Russia

Revolutionary Russia provides a striking backdrop for a compact stealth adventure built around escape, infiltration, and political chaos. Set in the aftermath of the October Revolution, the story follows Assassin Nikolaï Orelov as a final mission pulls him into the fate of the Romanov family and forces him to protect the young Anastasia. Its 2.5D perspective turns Moscow, the Kremlin, and the Trans-Siberian Railway into tense side-scrolling obstacle courses, while the propaganda-poster visual style gives every skyline, soldier, and burst of gunfire a distinctive red-and-black identity. The mood is more desperate than triumphant, with a weary hero trying to leave violence behind while history closes in around him.

Most stages ask you to scout patrol patterns, cling to ledges, slip through shadows, and choose between silent assassinations or louder confrontations. Nikolaï uses classic Assassin tools alongside period-specific equipment: rifles allow long-range shots, while elevators, radios, trip wires, trucks, tanks, and moving trains create opportunities and hazards that fit the early twentieth-century setting. Missions regularly shift between careful stealth platforming, chase sequences, sniping segments, and environmental puzzles, keeping the short campaign from becoming too repetitive. Detection is punishing on tougher difficulty settings, encouraging patience, route planning, and mastery of each level’s optional objectives.

Unlike the sprawling open worlds of the main Assassin’s Creed series, Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: Russia is a focused, linear experience closer to Mark of the Ninja or Prince of Persia-style platforming with assassination mechanics layered on top. Its strongest feature is the setting: few games use the Russian Revolution so effectively, and the stylized presentation makes the historical landmarks feel like animated political art. Some combat and movement feel less fluid than in the series’ larger entries, but the tight levels work well for replaying cleaner stealth runs and chasing higher scores. It suits Assassin’s Creed fans who want a brief, story-driven side chapter, as well as stealth-platformer players looking for a more unusual historical setting.
