Assassin’s Creed Odyssey leans hard into action RPG territory, casting you as Kassandra or Alexios, a mercenary with a fractured family history and a place in the wider conflict between mortal ambition and ancient mystery. The tone balances heroic adventure, political drama, and occasional mythological spectacle rather than the tighter stealth conspiracy of earlier entries. Its enormous map rewards curiosity, whether you are hunting cultists, climbing temples, chasing rumors, or simply sailing across the Aegean at sunset.

Combat centers on fast melee encounters with swords, spears, daggers, bows, dodges, parries, and powerful ability-based attacks fueled by adrenaline. Gear drops constantly, and leveling lets you shape a stealthy assassin, armored warrior, long-range hunter, or flexible hybrid while engraving equipment with useful bonuses. Dialogue choices influence relationships and major story outcomes, while the mercenary system creates roaming rivals who can hunt you down if your crimes attract too much attention. Beyond quests and fort infiltration, you command the Adrestia in naval fights, recruit a crew, upgrade the ship, and use ramming, arrows, javelins, and boarding actions against pirate fleets.

Scale is the defining feature: Greece feels less like a backdrop and more like an entire vacation-sized historical world filled with distinct regions, local conflicts, and mythology-infused side stories. Conquest battles provide chaotic army clashes, though their strategic consequences are lighter than they first appear, and the loot-driven structure can become repetitive for players who dislike map icons and level gating. Stealth remains effective, but direct combat is more central here than in many Assassin’s Creed entries. Fans of The Witcher 3’s questing, Shadow of Mordor’s open-ended combat, or large Ubisoft sandboxes find plenty to enjoy, while series purists should expect a long, RPG-heavy departure rather than a focused assassination simulator.
