Astalon: Tears of the Earth (v1.1.0)

A dying desert world and a colossal, monster-ridden tower provide the backdrop for a remarkably dense retro action-platformer. Astalon: Tears of the Earth follows three adventurers seeking a way to save their struggling village, only to become entangled in a bargain with the Titan of Death. Death is not a failure state here so much as a resource: fallen heroes return to continue the climb, carrying the consequences of their discoveries into the next attempt. The tone balances bleak ruins, ancient gods, and desperate sacrifice with the satisfaction of steadily conquering an enormous labyrinth.

Players alternate between Arias, a sword-and-shield warrior, Kyuli, an agile rogue with a ranged attack, and Algus, a spellcasting wizard, with each hero opening routes the others cannot handle. Combat demands careful positioning against flying beasts, armored guards, traps, and larger bosses, while the tower’s rooms continually reward observation and backtracking. Checkpoints, shortcuts, keys, artifacts, and character-specific upgrades gradually turn seemingly impossible passages into accessible territory. After dying or returning to safety, collected currency can be invested through the Titan’s power to improve health, damage, mobility, and useful passive abilities, making every expedition meaningful even when it ends badly.

Its strongest feature is how convincingly the tower feels like a single interlocked place rather than a sequence of disconnected levels. The crisp 8-bit-inspired visuals, expressive character portraits, ominous soundtrack, and extensive hidden rooms give the adventure a classic-era feel without sacrificing modern quality-of-life design. Switching heroes creates puzzle variety beyond the usual Metroidvania formula, while the reincarnation system softens the genre’s difficulty without removing its tension. Fans of Castlevania, Shovel Knight, and exploration-heavy action platformers will find plenty to love, and patient newcomers can enjoy it too if they are willing to map routes, revisit old areas, and learn from death.
