Astria Ascending

Orcanon is a hand-painted fantasy realm where eight adult heroes known as Demigods spend their final year defending civilization from an escalating wave of monsters. Astria Ascending pairs traditional Japanese RPG structure with an unusually somber tale about duty, mortality, faith, and betrayal, giving its party more emotional baggage than the genre’s usual teenage chosen ones. Five visually distinct cities, long side-scrolling dungeons, and a world shaped by changing weather give the adventure a rich storybook look, even when its subject matter turns bleak. Full Japanese and English voice work helps sell the large cast and dialogue-heavy narrative.

Combat uses turn-based party battles built around careful resource management rather than simple attack spam. Each character has a starting role but can be developed through 20 job classes, letting players build specialists in elemental magic, healing, support, physical damage, or hybrid setups. Battles against Orcanon’s huge monster roster reward exploiting weaknesses, building Focus Points, calling powerful creatures, and spending charged Cosmo Break attacks at the right moment. Dungeon routes mix enemy encounters with traversal challenges, environmental puzzles, treasure hunting, and occasional minigames, including a card game and arcade-style shooting segments. The main path is substantial, while optional activities and experimentation with jobs add considerably more time for players who enjoy optimizing a party.

Its strongest asset is the presentation: every location, enemy, and character is rendered in lush 2D art that feels closer to an illustrated fantasy serial than a standard 3D RPG. The job system provides welcome flexibility, although the dense mechanics and sometimes demanding boss fights ask players to learn their tools instead of coasting through battles. Astria Ascending does not reach the polish or pacing consistency of Final Fantasy, but it has a distinctive personality and more mature dramatic ambitions than many modern JRPGs. Fans of Bravely Default-style class customization, strategic turn-based combat, and richly drawn fantasy worlds should find plenty to enjoy, while newcomers should be ready for a dialogue-heavy, occasionally challenging adventure.
