Combat plays as a fast first-person action RPG, with the option to view your character in third person. You swap between swords, shields, bows, firearms, wands, and grimoires, mixing direct attacks with elemental spells and defensive parries rather than relying on a strict class system. Questing sends you through several large, hand-built regions where conversations, faction disputes, hidden caves, and environmental paths reward curiosity; your dialogue choices and actions influence relationships, outcomes, and the direction of individual stories. Rather than copying Skyrim’s open-ended sandbox structure, Avowed feels closer to a polished, more action-focused take on The Outer Worlds set in a classic fantasy realm. Its strongest asset is the Living Lands itself: each zone has a distinct visual identity, from sunlit grasslands to eerie fungal caverns, while the Pillars of Eternity lore gives optional depth to players who want it without blocking newcomers. PC features such as ultrawide support, unlocked frame rates, ray-traced lighting, DLSS, and Reflex make the presentation especially appealing on capable hardware. Fans of BioWare-style companion RPGs, first-person spellcasting, and meaningful quest decisions find plenty to enjoy, while Pillars veterans get an accessible new perspective on Eora.
