Batman: Vengeance casts players as the Dark Knight during a conspiracy that begins with the apparent death of the Joker and quickly pulls in familiar enemies including Harley Quinn, Mr. Freeze, and Poison Ivy. The tone balances Saturday-morning cartoon color with noir detective drama, delivering a compact superhero story that feels closely tied to the animated series rather than a generic comic-book brawler.

Most of the campaign plays as a third-person mix of combat, platforming, stealth, and light investigation. Batman punches through groups of thugs, dodges attacks, throws Batarangs, glides across gaps, and uses gadgets such as a grappling launcher to reach ledges and solve environmental problems. Levels frequently ask players to inspect crime scenes, locate switches, follow clues, or navigate traps before the next confrontation, so it is not solely about clearing rooms of enemies. The adventure also changes pace with Batmobile sequences, including driving and pursuit missions that add variety, even if their controls feel more dated than the on-foot sections.

Its strongest feature is the presentation: sharp cel-shaded visuals, atmospheric Gotham locations, and voice performances associated with the animated Batman era make it feel like a lost extended episode. Vengeance is more linear and mechanically simple than later Batman games such as Arkham Asylum, with fixed camera angles and occasional awkward jumps reflecting its early-2000s design. Still, its focused structure keeps the story moving, and the blend of gadgets, detective work, and animated-series fan service gives it a distinct identity. It suits Batman animation fans and retro action-adventure players best, while anyone expecting Arkham-level combat depth or an open city should approach it as a historical, story-driven classic.
