Game Overview

A hostile alien planet turns every rescue attempt into a bloody experiment in survival. Beacon is a top-down sci-fi roguelite that follows mercenary Freja Akiyama after her ship crashes far from the distress signal that might lead her home. Her Clone Bay continues producing replacements whenever she dies, but each new body raises unsettling questions about identity, memory, and the cost of repeatedly rebuilding a person. The mood balances colorful retro-futurist visuals and sharp humor with a genuinely grim story about isolation and bodily transformation.

Runs revolve around pushing through dangerous, procedurally arranged regions, searching rooms for keys, supplies, weapons, upgrades, and the next route forward. Freja fights with twin-stick shooting controls, using firearms, grenades, melee options, and temporary equipment while hostile creatures swarm from multiple directions. Fallen enemies also provide DNA, which becomes the game’s most important long-term resource: death sends players back to the cloning chamber, where collected genetic material modifies the next clone’s health, damage, movement, resistances, and even physical form. Mutations can create powerful combinations, such as extra limbs, unusual mobility, or altered combat traits, but poor choices can leave a clone unstable and ill-suited to later encounters.

Its cloning system gives failure more personality than the usual roguelite upgrade screen, because every run can produce a visibly and mechanically different version of Freja. Weapons feel varied enough to support changing builds, while the randomized layouts and escalating threats keep familiar zones from becoming entirely predictable. Narrative fragments gradually explain the planet, the beacon, and the unnerving implications of Freja’s endless replication rather than treating the story as background flavor. Fans of Nuclear Throne, Enter the Gungeon, or fast arcade shooters who want a more experimental progression system should find plenty to like, although the demanding combat and mutation management reward players already comfortable with repeated deaths.
