Bionic Commando

Nathan “R.A.D.” Spencer returns to a ruined Ascension City with a death sentence hanging over him and a bionic arm as his only real chance of survival. Set five years after the NES original, Bionic Commando trades side-scrolling battlefields for a devastated 3D metropolis fractured by an experimental weapon and overrun by terrorists, mutants, and military hardware. The mood is harsher and more cynical than its retro predecessor, framing Spencer as a betrayed soldier forced back into service by the same government that imprisoned him. Its story leans into conspiracy-thriller territory, but the main draw remains the fantasy of moving through impossible vertical spaces with a mechanical grappling arm.

Traversal defines nearly every encounter. Spencer cannot jump in the conventional sense; instead, players latch onto cranes, billboards, bridge supports, and other scenery, then build momentum to swing across gaps or launch themselves onto rooftops. Combat blends third-person shooting with physical bionic-arm attacks, letting Spencer grab enemies, hurl debris, pull shields away, and use the environment as a weapon. Missions move between open urban traversal areas and more directed combat sequences, while collectible upgrades improve arm functions, weapons, health, and survivability. Swinging demands timing and spatial awareness, and early sections can feel deliberately awkward until the movement system clicks, but mastery makes the city far more satisfying to navigate.

What separates Bionic Commando from most action shooters is its refusal to treat mobility as an automatic convenience. Every rooftop, broken freeway, and towering structure becomes part of a traversal puzzle, giving Ascension City a sense of scale that standard cover shooters rarely achieve. The 2009 presentation has some rough edges, including uneven shooting and a story that does not always match its ambitious premise, yet the arm-driven movement remains genuinely distinctive. Fans of Spider-Man-style swinging, Crackdown’s vertical playgrounds, or experimental late-2000s action games find plenty to enjoy, while newcomers should arrive ready to learn a demanding control scheme rather than expect an effortless shooter.
