Its tone is knowingly pulpy and colorful rather than grim, with exaggerated characters, giant monsters, and lavish fantasy scenery framing a straightforward hunt for wealth and survival. Beneath the campy attitude sits a surprisingly demanding combat game built around momentum and spectacle.

Combat revolves around close-range sword combos, pistols and rifles for ranged pressure, evasive movement, and an expanding list of magical attacks. Ayumi earns experience and upgrades through battles, unlocking new skills that let players tailor her toward aggressive melee strings, gunplay, or powerful area attacks. The defining mechanic is Time Rewind, which creates a controllable clone that repeats Ayumi’s previous actions; it can hold switches, distract enemies, attack alongside her, and solve environmental puzzles that would otherwise be impossible. Levels mix arena fights with platforming, light exploration, treasure collecting, and occasional boss encounters, while escalating enemy groups demand more awareness than simple button-mashing.

The rewind system gives Blades of Time its own identity among character-action games, turning combat and puzzles into small exercises in planning as well as reflexes.
