You play Zangetsu, a sword-wielding demon slayer pursuing the forces behind a corrupted castle and the horrors spreading across the land. Its pixel art, chiptune soundtrack, and screen-by-screen level design create a moody old-school atmosphere, but the controls remain responsive enough to feel modern. Expect spikes, bottomless pits, relentless enemies, and bosses that punish panic just as much as poor timing.

Zangetsu begins with his katana, sub-weapons, and a limited supply of special ammunition, but the real hook is the party system. Along the journey, he encounters allies such as whip user Miriam, spellcasting alchemist Alfred, and the winged demon Gebel; each becomes a selectable character with distinct attacks, movement options, health totals, and traversal skills. Switching heroes on the fly lets you bypass hazards, reach alternate routes, and approach bosses with different tools, while losing a character removes that option until the next stage. Recruitment is not automatic: Zangetsu can accept companions or sacrifice them, making the campaign easier or harsher and altering which ending he receives. Tight jumps, enemy patterns, resource management, and smart character swaps form the core loop rather than open-ended exploration.

What makes Curse of the Moon stand out is how much meaningful choice it extracts from a compact retro action format. Stages reward repeat runs with hidden paths and multiple difficulty setups, while later modes add fresh twists for players who master the initial campaign. Inti Creates gives every boss and location a strong silhouette, from rain-soaked villages to clockwork towers and grotesque laboratories, making its restricted visual style feel intentional rather than nostalgic padding.
