A flooded summer school becomes the unlikely refuge for a group of girls who cannot remember how they arrived or what they have lost. BLUE REFLECTION: Second Light is an anime-styled JRPG built around mystery, friendship, and the uneasy beauty of a world suspended between everyday school life and surreal dreamscapes. Ao Hoshizaki serves as the emotional center, forming bonds with fellow students while searching for a way home across endless blue water. Its mood shifts gracefully from warm, playful hangouts to intimate character drama and strange, threatening fantasy.

Most of your time alternates between exploring the academy, responding to the girls’ requests, and venturing into Heartscapes, otherworldly zones shaped by individual memories and emotions. Battles use a brisk command-based system rather than traditional static turn-taking: actions build Ether, raise characters through combat “gears,” and unlock stronger attacks, support skills, and flashy team combinations. Positioning, enemy weaknesses, defensive timing, and managing the pace of your assaults matter, so encounters feel more active than the usual menu-driven JRPG. Outside combat, dates and conversations raise Talent levels, while gathered materials feed into crafting and school development; building facilities such as food stalls, decorations, and leisure spaces grants useful items and creates a more personal home base.

The strongest feature is how closely its systems support its themes: learning what each girl wants, helping with small problems, and entering her Heartscape all make the central relationships feel earned. Mel Kishida’s soft, luminous character designs and the waterbound campus give the game a distinctive, dreamlike look, even when its environments can be modest by modern standards. Fans of character-focused series such as Atelier, Persona’s social side, or other Gust RPGs should find plenty to enjoy, especially if they value atmosphere over punishing difficulty. Newcomers can comfortably follow its approachable combat, while veterans get the most from experimenting with party setups, crafting, and relationship-driven side content.
