BOOK OF HOURS trades combat and conventional questing for a slow, absorbing restoration of knowledge, casting you as the new Librarian after a fire scatters the collection and erases much of the estate’s past. Its mood is hushed, melancholy, and deeply tactile: rain taps at old windows while you sort books, prepare strange inks, and turn a crumbling coastal abbey into a livable home. The setting shares the Secret Histories universe with Cultist Simulator, but its focus is gentler and more solitary.

Most of your time goes into examining books and artifacts, identifying their hidden principles, then using the right combinations of skills, memories, tools, beverages, and soul aspects to read, craft, repair, or unlock new possibilities. Each restored room expands the library’s usable space and creates fresh problems, as furniture, visitors, and specialized workstations all feed into your growing web of knowledge. Nine Wisdoms and nine soul Elements shape your librarian’s capabilities, while the Legacy chosen at the beginning provides a distinct personal history and changes the flavor of your run. Visitors periodically arrive with requests, creating compact narrative puzzles where your advice, resources, and decisions influence both their investigations and the wider world.

What stands out is the deliberate pleasure of cataloguing rather than conquering; progress feels like learning the internal logic of an impossible archive instead of grinding for power. The interface can initially seem dense, especially for players unfamiliar with Weather Factory’s slot-based systems, but patience pays off as obscure symbols and crafting chains begin to make sense. Gorgeous illustrated cards, richly specific writing, and an estate packed with secrets give it the appeal of a literary puzzle box. Fans of Cultist Simulator, Sunless Sea, Pentiment, or slow-burn management games will find plenty to savor, while newcomers should come prepared for a demanding but rewarding game that values curiosity over speed.
