Saint-Exil looks like a postcard corner of the Breton coast, but its empty streets, severe weather, and looming lighthouse turn it into a deeply uneasy place to live. Broken Pieces casts players as Elise, a woman stranded after a mysterious event leaves her fiancé and every other resident gone. Set against a distinctly 1990s, post-Cold War mood, the story mixes personal isolation with cult rituals, supernatural disturbances, and the feeling that the village itself is hiding a carefully buried past. Its tone lands somewhere between a small-town conspiracy thriller and old-school survival horror, favoring tension and curiosity over nonstop action.

Elise spends her days searching homes, beaches, bunkers, and local landmarks for keys, documents, recorded tapes, and puzzle solutions that push the investigation forward. Time matters: venturing too far from home risks leaving her exposed after dark, so planning routes, carrying the right supplies, and deciding which leads to pursue gives exploration real weight. Inventory space is deliberately limited, while tape analysis, environmental interactions, shifting weather, and occasional diversions such as an arcade cabinet make the village feel more tangible than a simple series of puzzle rooms. Combat uses fixed-angle encounters that evoke Resident Evil, asking players to dodge, use Elise’s abilities to create distance, conserve ammunition, and improve firearms through crafted ammo rather than brute-force every threat.

The camera system is Broken Pieces’ clearest calling card, letting players swap from an accessible over-the-shoulder view to deliberately retro angles or first-person inspection when details matter. Handheld-camera cinematic scenes and Pierre for Élise’s melancholy score strengthen the sense of watching an unsettling French thriller unfold, even when the adventure’s controls and combat feel intentionally old-fashioned. Resting, finding drinks, and returning safely home to recover health reinforce Elise’s vulnerability without making survival systems overly punishing. Fans of Silent Hill, Resident Evil’s puzzle-heavy entries, and narrative adventures with a strong sense of place should find plenty to like, while newcomers willing to accept a slower, atmospheric 9-to-12-hour mystery get a distinctive change of pace.
