It remains an intense, cinematic FPS, but its best moments come from never quite letting you trust what Mason sees or remembers.

Black Ops stands apart from many military shooters through its period setting, memorable soundtrack, and willingness to lean into pulp espionage, brainwashing, and historical fiction rather than straightforward battlefield drama. Its levels are tightly directed rather than open-ended, yet their varied locations and frequent changes of pace give the campaign a strong momentum across repeated playthroughs. Zombies, especially its original maps and escalating round structure, adds substantial replay value whether played alone or with friends. Fans of Modern Warfare’s polished action, Battlefield: Bad Company 2’s era, or cinematic shooters with a darker conspiracy angle find plenty to like here, while newcomers get one of the more accessible and distinctive entries in the Call of Duty catalogue.
