A glitched virtual game world becomes the scene of a colorful digital mystery in Card-en-Ciel, a roguelike deckbuilder built with the energy of a classic anime JRPG. You play Neon, a VR-focused detective investigating why characters from countless fictional games have spilled into an unfinished title and started rewriting its rules. The tone is playful and self-aware, but the campaign gives its crossover premise enough narrative momentum to make each dungeon feel like more than a string of card battles. Fully voiced character banter in English and Japanese helps sell the idea that every card represents an actual personality with history, rivalries, and opinions.

Combat revolves around assembling a fresh deck during each dungeon run, recruiting new allies after fights and shaping combinations around the cards you find. Battles play out on a 6×3 tactical grid, adding positioning and target selection to the usual draw-and-play deckbuilder rhythm; strong turns depend on timing attacks, arranging effects, and exploiting enemy formations. Neon can move through dungeon areas at his own pace, choosing which encounters to challenge while weighing rewards against the danger of reaching a boss underpowered. Muse cards are the major wild card: meet their activation requirements and they launch into full vocal performances that trigger powerful ongoing effects, often turning a modest deck into a spectacular combo engine.

More than 300 character cards, dozens of random events, and dungeon-specific pools keep runs from feeling scripted, while the campaign’s ten-plus story dungeons provide a substantial framework for collecting them. The soundtrack is unusually ambitious for the genre, with around 50 vocal tracks styled to fit the imagined worlds each Muse comes from rather than serving as generic battle music. Extra challenge tiers, constructed-deck Grand Battle Dungeons, leaderboard challenges, and real-time online matches give dedicated players plenty to master after the story. Fans of Slay the Spire-style deckbuilding who want more character-driven presentation, grid tactics, and unapologetically anime spectacle find a lot to enjoy here, though newcomers should expect a busy system that rewards experimentation.
