Castle Of The Underdogs : Episode 1 takes the party-building spirit of Suikoden and drops it into the Bestann Federation, where restoring peace often involves robbing houses, upsetting villagers, and collecting allies with increasingly bizarre personal problems. Its tone is light, irreverent, and deliberately unpredictable, with jokes driven as much by the cast’s bad decisions as by the plot itself. Beneath the silliness, it still offers the familiar satisfaction of gathering a growing force and turning a neglected headquarters into a lively base of operations.

Hikaru learns magic, loots equipment, searches towns and dungeons for treasure, and recruits dozens of characters who return to the castle once convinced to join. Battles are turn-based but more active than a simple menu exchange: six party members are available, three fight at once, and strategic tagging lets players swap combatants to answer changing threats. Character combinations unlock Unite Attacks, while spells, skills, and stolen gear give the roster plenty of room to develop. A knowledge system gradually reveals enemy resistances and vulnerabilities, then feeds into rune creation, allowing learned information to become customized magical tools. Five adjustable difficulty settings make the campaign approachable for story-focused players while leaving room for tougher tactical encounters, and the generous save system suits experimentation.

The strongest hook is the collision between an old-school recruitment RPG structure and a cast that treats heroism as an opportunity for nonsense. Rather than presenting its castle as a solemn war room, the game uses it as a showcase for oddball recruits, each bringing another joke, side activity, or strange perspective to the adventure. Its combat ideas draw clear inspiration from Final Fantasy X and Suikoden, yet the tag mechanic and knowledge-driven rune crafting give it its own tactical rhythm. Fans of humorous indie RPGs, large party rosters, and systems-heavy turn-based combat should find plenty to enjoy, while newcomers can lower the challenge and focus on Hikaru’s chaotic story.
