Game Overview

World War II tactics take centre stage as you command a company from the US 1st Infantry Division through North Africa, Sicily, and Normandy. Close Combat: The Bloody First trades grand-strategy abstraction for tense, small-scale engagements where a badly placed squad or an exposed tank can unravel an entire attack. Its mood is methodical and unforgiving: victories come from patience, fieldcraft, and understanding where every machine gun, mortar round, and rifle team belongs. The campaign follows the Big Red One from Tunisia’s harsh ridges to the hedgerows of France, facing German and Italian forces along the way.

Battles play out in real time, but success depends far more on issuing sensible orders than on fast clicking. You position squads behind cover, establish fields of fire, scout dangerous ground, suppress enemy positions, and coordinate infantry with mortars, anti-tank guns, armored cars, tanks, artillery, and air support. Linked operations make manpower matter, since surviving veterans and depleted units carry their condition forward rather than resetting after every skirmish. The 3D Archon engine adds terrain elevation, projectile behaviour, movement physics, and ammunition details to the series’ classic tactical formula, while 32 maps provide cramped villages, valleys, beaches, hills, and bocage country. Multiplayer support also lets players test their battlefield reading against human opponents.

What separates The Bloody First from more cinematic WWII strategy games is its focus on the ugly practicalities of platoon-and-company command. A narrow lane, a stone wall, or a concealed gun can become the decisive feature of a map, encouraging careful reconnaissance and combined-arms thinking instead of reckless advances. The three theatre campaigns, larger grand campaign, 11 operations, and 36 battles offer substantial historical variety, including Italian troops and early-war American equipment that rarely receive much attention. Fans of Combat Mission, Steel Panthers, or earlier Close Combat entries should appreciate its deliberate pace and tactical detail, while newcomers need patience for its demanding interface and punishing battlefield lessons.
