The Helios is a gleaming, impossible ocean liner turned into a nightmare, where Nikola Tesla’s scientific utopia has collapsed into panic, bloodshed, and warped reality. Set in an alternate 1897, Close To The Sun follows journalist Rose Archer as she boards the isolated vessel searching for her missing sister, only to find its brilliant residents vanished or driven mad by experiments beyond human control. The mood leans heavily into first-person psychological horror: storm-lashed corridors, towering golden statues, Art Deco grandeur, and the constant sense that something has gone terribly wrong. Rather than relying on monsters around every corner, it builds tension through unsettling discoveries, frantic voices over the intercom, and a mystery rooted in science pushed past ethical limits.

Rose spends most of her time navigating the Helios’s lavish but increasingly damaged decks, reading notes, examining strange machines, and piecing together the fate of Tesla’s isolated research community. Environmental puzzles ask players to observe symbols, operate experimental devices, restore power, and locate the route forward, though the solutions generally keep the story moving rather than becoming major brainteasers. There is no combat system, so danger arrives through scripted chase sequences and moments where running, hiding, and reacting quickly matter more than fighting back. The adventure is largely linear and lasts around six to eight hours, making it better suited to a focused story playthrough than open-ended exploration or repeatable challenge runs.

Its strongest feature is the setting: few horror adventures use Tesla’s real-world mystique and a lavish retro-futurist cruise ship so effectively. The ship feels like a BioShock-style abandoned utopia without the shooting, while the emphasis on fleeing and helplessness recalls Amnesia or Outlast in lighter, more accessible form. Voice performances and visual design sell Rose’s personal stakes, even when some puzzles and chase scenes feel simple or rigid. Close To The Sun suits players who want an atmospheric, narrative-led horror mystery with striking scenery and sci-fi ideas, but veterans seeking deep survival systems, combat, or complex puzzles may find it too straightforward.
