Codename Eagle

An alternate 1917 turns Europe into a powder keg, with Imperial Russia building a military force powerful enough to redraw the continent by force. Codename Eagle places players in the boots of an Allied operative sent behind enemy lines to slow that expansion before open war consumes Europe. Its mix of early aircraft, armored vehicles, boats, and infantry combat gives the campaign a distinct pre-World War I flavor that few shooters attempt. The tone is more pulp military adventure than grim historical simulation, but the setting still gives every mission an unusual sense of scale.

Missions combine first-person shooting with vehicle-driven objectives across broad outdoor battlefields. Players move on foot with period weapons, seize enemy positions, infiltrate installations, and switch into trucks, tanks, motorcycles, ships, and biplanes when the situation demands it. Vehicles are not merely decorative transport: flying over defenses, attacking from the water, or using armor to breach a fortified area often changes the best way to approach an objective. Combat reflects its late-1990s design, so movement and shooting feel more straightforward than modern FPS games, while the large maps reward patience, experimentation, and a willingness to make your own route through the action.

Its biggest claim to fame is the foundation it lays for a later generation of sandbox military shooters. Refraction Games eventually becomes part of DICE, and the DNA is easy to spot in the open battle spaces, combined-arms combat, and freedom to jump between infantry and machines; it feels like a rough, ambitious ancestor to Battlefield 1942. The visuals and interface are unmistakably classic, and some mission design can feel dated, but the vehicle variety remains impressive for its era. Fans of old-school FPS campaigns, early Battlefield history, and unusual alternate-history settings find plenty to enjoy, while players expecting modern checkpoints, polish, and cinematic storytelling should arrive with appropriate patience.
