A cracked wall in an ordinary apartment opens onto a subterranean mansion where chairs grow teeth, cabinets stalk corridors, and birdlike citizens guard a long-buried family secret. Creaks is a hand-drawn puzzle adventure from Amanita Design, trading the studio’s usual point-and-click structure for carefully staged side-scrolling rooms and environmental brainteasers. Its mood is strange rather than outright frightening: every shadow suggests danger, but the richly painted halls, playful creatures, and expressive animation give the journey a storybook warmth. The result feels like a silent animated film that happens to challenge your spatial reasoning at every turn.

Most of the adventure revolves around navigating rooms inhabited by hostile furniture creatures that change form when exposed to light. You manipulate lamps, switches, movable blocks, elevators, and other mechanisms to create safe paths, often needing to predict exactly where a monster will be able to move after the lights shift. There is no combat or inventory clutter; progress comes from observing the layout, experimenting with devices, and advancing one screen at a time. Puzzles gradually introduce new enemy types and mechanics, keeping the logic fresh without demanding twitch reflexes, while optional hidden paintings reward players who inspect the mansion’s side passages.

Creaks stands out through its exceptional audiovisual craft. Its painted backgrounds are packed with odd details, every character and monster moves with tactile personality, and Hidden Orchestra’s score adds a pleasantly uneasy pulse to even the quietest puzzle rooms. The mansion also tells much of its story visually, allowing players to piece together its inhabitants’ relationships and history without lengthy exposition. Fans of Machinarium, Limbo, and other atmospheric indie puzzlers will find familiar pleasures here, though Creaks is more interested in deliberate logic challenges than platforming danger. It suits newcomers because its rules are introduced clearly, yet puzzle veterans will appreciate later rooms that turn simple light-and-shadow ideas into clever multi-step problems.
