Cultist Simulator is a narrative-heavy card game where ordinary work, restless dreams, and private obsessions can slowly turn a would-be scholar into the leader of a dangerous secret society. Its tone is deliberately cryptic and oppressive, letting players piece together a cosmology of strange gods, rival histories, and inhuman desires rather than explaining everything outright. Failure is common, death is permanent for a given character, and even success often carries a disturbing cost.

Play unfolds on a tabletop-like board where cards represent resources, people, memories, ailments, lore, and opportunities. Cards are placed into action slots to work a job, study an ancient text, dream, talk to an acquaintance, conduct rituals, or send followers on expeditions; each action runs on a timer and can create unexpected complications. Early survival means balancing income, health, reason, passion, and mounting fascination or dread, while later runs involve recruiting believers, advancing them into specialists, acquiring occult tools, and pursuing a cult’s particular path to ascension. Investigators, hostile rivals, sickness, hunger, and personal compulsions keep the pressure on, so careful planning matters as much as deciphering which card combinations unlock new possibilities.

What separates Cultist Simulator from most roguelikes is its willingness to make confusion part of the drama. The interface offers few direct answers, and learning its systems feels like decoding a forbidden manual, rewarding note-taking, experimentation, and repeated failed attempts. Its prose recalls Fallen London and Sunless Sea, but the card-driven structure makes every playthrough feel more personal: one seeker may become a scholar, another a criminal mystic, and another a doomed servant of an alien power.
