Cuphead is a demanding run-and-gun action platformer built around elaborate boss encounters, following Cuphead and his brother Mugman as they try to repay a disastrous debt to the Devil. Its cheery jazz, watercolor backdrops, and old-film scratches create a playful surface, but the mood quickly becomes tense once projectiles begin filling the screen. Most stages send players through short platforming levels or directly into multi-phase boss fights, where attack patterns shift dramatically as enemies transform into stranger and more dangerous forms. Cuphead can equip different shots, special attacks, and charms, allowing room to tailor a build toward range, damage, mobility, or survivability. Pink objects can be parried for extra energy, creating an important risk-reward mechanic: getting close to danger fuels the powerful super moves needed to survive later phases. What separates Cuphead from most modern indie platformers is the sheer craft behind its presentation: every enemy is traditionally animated, and its visual gags remain memorable even after repeated failures. The bosses feel closer to classic arcade endurance tests than sprawling action-RPG battles, with success coming from reading tells and executing cleanly rather than grinding levels.
