Game Overview

A time-warping revenge story carries you from a plague-ridden medieval city to ancient Greece, near-future Japan, and a dystopian 25th century. Hiro Miyamoto hunts Kage Mishima, a tyrant who reshapes history with the Daikatana, an impossibly powerful sword capable of bending time itself. The result is a first-person shooter with grand ambitions: equal parts fantasy adventure, sci-fi conspiracy, and old-school corridor combat. Its tone is unapologetically late-1990s, packed with oversized weapons, strange creatures, and melodramatic stakes.

Combat revolves around collecting an enormous arsenal of firearms, explosives, energy weapons, and melee tools, then using whatever best fits the current era and enemy type. Levels mix key hunting, switches, environmental hazards, platforming, and direct firefights, with each time period introducing a different visual identity and set of monsters. Hiro is eventually joined by Superfly Johnson and Mikiko Ebihara, AI-controlled companions who can provide firepower but also require patience as they navigate danger and occasionally get in the way. The campaign is long by classic shooter standards, while deathmatch multiplayer supports the fast, item-driven arena action expected from its generation.

Daikatana stands out less for polish than for sheer scope: few shooters of its era attempt four distinct historical settings, companion characters, melee swordplay, and a sprawling single-player quest in one package. Its famously rough AI, uneven level design, and dated presentation make it a curiosity rather than an essential shooter, but the game has a genuine eccentric charm that smoother modern releases rarely replicate. Players who enjoy Doom-era and Quake-era shooters, especially games with labyrinthine maps and experimental mechanics, can find plenty to investigate here. Newcomers should arrive with patience and lowered expectations; veterans of PC gaming history may appreciate it most as a bold, messy artifact from an era when ambition routinely outran technology.
