Hell becomes a fast, violent playground in this prequel, which trades the series’ usual third-person perspective for a punchy, isometric action-adventure format. War brings the oversized sword swings and brutal strength fans expect, while newly playable Horseman Strife attacks from range with twin pistols, bringing a more mobile, arcade-like edge to every encounter. Their mission sends them after demon lords empowered by Lucifer, gradually uncovering a conspiracy that threatens the cosmic balance between Heaven, Hell, and humanity. The tone remains grim and apocalyptic, but the bickering partnership between the two Horsemen gives the campaign an enjoyable burst of personality.

Combat revolves around clearing enemy-packed arenas with melee strings, gunfire, dodges, executions, and devastating Wrath abilities. Players can tackle the adventure alone, freely swapping between War and Strife to suit the situation, or bring in a second player for cooperative demon hunting. Levels mix combat with environmental puzzles, platforming routes, hidden collectibles, and light traversal challenges, so success involves more than simply surviving the next mob. Creature Cores earned from defeated foes offer passive upgrades and ability modifiers, while currency, gear enhancements, and the optional arena-style Void challenges provide worthwhile reasons to search side paths and revisit difficult fights.

Its strongest idea is how naturally the two heroes complement each other: War excels when he gets in close, whereas Strife controls space, peppers targets with bullets, and quickly handles distant threats. The elevated camera makes encounters easier to read than in earlier entries, yet the game preserves the franchise’s exaggerated character designs, demonic architecture, and satisfying sense of supernatural power. Although it is more compact and mission-driven than a sprawling open-world action game, secret hunting and multiple difficulty settings give the campaign replay value. Fans of Diablo-style dungeon action, twin-stick shooters, or earlier Darksiders games find plenty to like, and newcomers can start here without needing prior lore knowledge.
