A freshly recruited Reaper goes rogue in a gloomy, hand-drawn afterlife where collecting souls becomes both a job and a rebellion. Death Tales blends side-scrolling action, light adventure structure, and darkly playful fantasy, sending its hooded hero through haunted levels filled with monsters, oddball residents, and grim responsibilities. The atmosphere is macabre without becoming oppressive, balancing skeletons and sinister beasts against goofy magical powers and colorful supporting characters. It feels like an accessible action-platformer built around the pleasure of becoming steadily more dangerous.

Combat revolves around clearing enemy-packed stages with weapons, armor, spells, and special abilities gathered along the way. Souls serve as currency, letting you purchase gear from Fiona’s rotating shop stock, while hidden chests reward players who search beyond the obvious route. Equipment supports different builds, whether you favor direct attacks, crowd control through freezing magic, aerial mobility with angel wings, or spectacular spells that call down meteors and even a charging unicorn herd. Thirty levels, side quests, daily bounties, and major boss encounters give the campaign more structure than a simple stage-by-stage brawler, while a controller is clearly the preferred way to handle movement and combat.

Its strongest feature is the amount of personality packed into a compact 2D adventure: the illustrated environments look grim but lively, and the spell list gives battles a welcome sense of chaos. Local co-op lets a second player join as Spaura, the Reaper’s Soul Bearer, making enemy swarms and exploration more entertaining with a friend on the couch. Daily merchant changes and varied equipment encourage repeat visits, although the core experience remains focused on straightforward action rather than deep role-playing systems.
