Depth of Extinction casts you as the military backbone of humanity’s last organized government, assembling operatives capable of surviving a world that has already largely collapsed. Its mood lands somewhere between XCOM’s tense squad command and a roguelike survival campaign, with violent skirmishes carrying real consequences. Missions gradually reveal more of the fractured setting while your decisions and survival shape the story that emerges.

Combat revolves around small squads, grid-based positioning, line of sight, cover, and careful use of each unit’s action economy. Ten classes give the roster distinct jobs, from straightforward fighters to specialists such as the Saboteur, while a large equipment pool lets you tailor builds around weapons, armor, consumables, and synergistic abilities. Stealth adds an important wrinkle: units can approach quietly, arrange favorable firing lines, and launch ambushes before enemies fully react. The game also uses action refunds in smart ways, rewarding efficient kills and tactical planning rather than simply encouraging slow, defensive play; losing soldiers matters, so every encounter asks whether a risky objective is worth the cost.

Depth of Extinction stands out through its waterlogged science-fiction atmosphere and its willingness to combine classic turn-based tactics with roguelike pressure, flexible character switching, and stealth-first openings. Enemy forces do not feel interchangeable, drawing from several rival groups with different threats and battlefield behaviors, while map variety pushes you to rethink reliable strategies. Post-launch revisions smooth out much of the original friction, including a less exhausting campaign pace, faster turns, controller support, expanded story material, and a Casual difficulty option.
