Deus Ex: The Fall

Corporate power, body augmentation, and a lethal drug shortage define this compact cyberpunk thriller set shortly before Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Former SAS operative Ben Saxon wakes up betrayed by the mercenary outfit that made him, then follows a conspiracy stretching from Moscow’s criminal underworld to Panama’s crowded streets. The Fall trades globe-spanning spectacle for a more personal survival story, but its world still carries the series’ familiar mood of mistrust, inequality, and gleaming technology built on human desperation.

Players tackle missions as flexible first-person infiltration jobs, choosing whether to sneak through guarded rooms, disable enemies quietly, or rely on firearms when a plan collapses. Ben’s augmentations support different approaches, with upgrades that improve combat, stealth, hacking, and social interactions, while credits and scavenged gear help maintain weapons and supplies. Hacking minigames open computers, terminals, and locked systems, often revealing alternate routes, useful information, or rewards. Side missions and explorable hubs add some welcome freedom, although the campaign remains a focused, relatively short experience rather than an enormous open-world RPG.

Its strongest feature is the classic Deus Ex idea that a mission rarely has only one solution: vents, keycards, conversations, passwords, and brute force can all move the investigation forward. The PC version benefits from mouse-and-keyboard controls, controller support, and achievements, though players should know it originates as a mobile release and retains smaller levels, simpler AI, and a less ambitious presentation than Human Revolution. That makes it an uneven but worthwhile side story for fans who want more of the series’ stealth-action/RPG hybrid and cyberpunk lore. Newcomers can enjoy its self-contained conspiracy, but veterans should approach it as a modest companion piece rather than a full-scale successor to Adam Jensen’s adventures.
