Nevendaar is a wounded dark-fantasy realm where religious zealots, undead rulers, elves, dwarves, and demons struggle for control, and no faction comes without blood on its hands. Disciples: Liberation casts you as Avyanna, a mercenary whose personal rise to power shapes the fate of the continent across a lengthy, choice-driven campaign. The tone is grim and political rather than purely heroic, with betrayals, brutal wars, and difficult alliances giving the adventure more weight than its colorful fantasy maps initially suggest. Its story spans three acts and offers multiple conclusions determined by the loyalties you build and the decisions you make.

Exploration unfolds across large regional maps packed with quests, loot, optional fights, faction representatives, and environmental secrets. Battles shift to a grid-based tactical arena, where a small party of heroes and recruited units uses positioning, melee attacks, ranged pressure, spells, buffs, and status effects to dismantle enemy forces. Avyanna can develop through four class paths, while more than 50 recruitable unit types let you create armies focused on armored frontliners, healing, magic, archery, undead summons, or other specialties. Between missions, you improve your capital city, unlocking stronger troops, equipment, structures, and services through resources and political influence. Boss encounters demand more than raw levels, often requiring careful target selection and an understanding of enemy abilities.

What separates it from older Disciples games and many strategy RPGs is its blend of character-led role-playing, faction politics, base growth, and sizable tactical battles. The world has the broad campaign-map feel of Heroes of Might and Magic, but combat is more deliberate and party-focused, closer to a simplified tactical RPG than a fast-moving strategy game. Its 80-hour scope can feel uneven, especially for players who prefer tightly paced campaigns, yet the abundance of side content and alternate endings rewards commitment. Fans of dark fantasy, turn-based planning, and morally messy RPG choices find plenty to enjoy, while newcomers should be ready for a long, systems-heavy adventure rather than a casual fantasy romp.
