Game Overview

Neon-soaked streets, ridiculous villains, and an unapologetically ’80s soundtrack give this side-scrolling brawler a personality far louder than its simple rescue plot suggests. Billy and Jimmy Lee return to punch, kick, and knee their way through a criminal army after Marian is kidnapped, but the familiar Double Dragon setup quickly turns into a knowingly absurd battle against the skull-faced menace Skullmageddon. The mood is part arcade throwback and part Saturday-morning action parody, complete with exaggerated enemies such as Abobo and Linda. Rather than treating its legacy with solemn reverence, Double Dragon: Neon makes every encounter feel like a cassette-era power fantasy.

Combat revolves around moving through compact stages, clearing waves of thugs, grabbing dropped weapons, and learning when to evade instead of blindly attacking. The Lee brothers use Sōsetsuken martial arts, with standard strikes, throws, jump attacks, and screen-clearing special moves forming the foundation, while collectible “tapes” add new techniques, buffs, and elemental effects. Tapes can be stacked into mixtapes, letting players tailor builds around stronger attacks, healing, defense, or flashy powers such as lightning and fire. Enemies hit hard enough to punish careless button mashing, particularly in crowded rooms and boss encounters, so spacing, dodges, and resource management matter more than in many old-school brawlers. Two players can tackle the campaign together, making its chaotic fights substantially more entertaining with a friend.

Its best idea is the tape system, which gives a genre usually built around temporary weapon pickups a welcome layer of long-term experimentation. Bright cartoon sprites and gloriously cheesy synth-rock transform grimy alleys and enemy hideouts into a distinct world rather than a generic retro revival. The campaign is not enormous, but difficulty options, collectible upgrades, and co-op runs provide reasons to revisit it. Fans of Streets of Rage, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and classic Double Dragon will appreciate the arcade foundations, while newcomers get a more forgiving, characterful entry point than many punishing older beat ’em ups.
