Dread Hunger combines first-person survival crafting with social deception, casting up to eight players as a stranded expedition crew while two hidden Thralls work to doom everyone else. The frozen Canadian wilderness is harsh even before sabotage begins: hunger, freezing temperatures, wildlife, whiteouts, and a pursuing storm constantly pressure the group to move. Its mood is grim, paranoid, and often darkly funny when a trusted crewmate suddenly serves poisoned stew or opens fire beside the boiler.

Most matches revolve around pushing the ship toward safety by gathering coal, navigating ice, repairing damage, and coordinating excursions inland for supplies. Players choose specialized roles with useful starting equipment, then hunt animals, mine resources, cook food, craft tools, and manage warmth while the clock and weather turn against them. Hidden traitors can steal critical coal, contaminate meals, summon or lure threats, lock people away, use occult abilities, and destroy the ship’s engine, but direct violence carries the risk of exposing their identity. What separates Dread Hunger from standard werewolf-style multiplayer is how thoroughly deception is tied to practical survival work. A saboteur needs to convincingly contribute to the voyage, while innocent players must decide whether a missing teammate is lost in a blizzard or quietly preparing a betrayal. Its slower, more physical pace feels closer to The Thing’s paranoia mixed with survival systems from Rust than a quick-fire party game. Players who enjoy emergent stories, bluffing, and punishing co-op challenges find plenty to savor, though newcomers should expect brutal early matches and a steep learning curve around maps, roles, and crew politics.
