EARTH DEFENSE FORCE: IRON RAIN (v1.01 & ALL DLC)

Earth is already scarred by an alien invasion, and humanity’s remaining defenders fight more from stubbornness than confidence. EARTH DEFENSE FORCE: IRON RAIN is a third-person shooter built around the series’ beloved spectacle: city blocks collapse, insects the size of buildings swarm the streets, and absurdly huge alien machines turn every mission into a firefight for survival. Its 2040 setting takes a more serious, cinematic approach than many EDF entries, but it still embraces the gleeful chaos of blasting hundreds of monsters with weapons far too large for one soldier to carry. The campaign frames every operation as part of a desperate counterattack against the Aggressors.

More than 50 missions send players into urban ruins, deserts, forests, and alien-infested battlefields, with five difficulty settings offering a substantial challenge curve. Combat revolves around selecting a class of powered armor and assembling a loadout from a vast armory of rifles, rocket launchers, sniper weapons, explosives, and bizarre experimental tools. The grounded Trooper suits conventional gunplay, while the Jet Lifter flies above the fight, the Heavy Striker brings shields and overwhelming firepower, and the Prowl Rider uses cables to rapidly move around enemies and terrain. Completing missions earns resources for new gear, while health pickups, limited ammunition, and huge enemy waves demand smart positioning rather than simple trigger-holding. Solo play supports split-screen co-op, and online missions let squads bring complementary builds to the same alien war.

IRON RAIN stands apart through its customizable protagonist, letting players alter appearance, voice, clothing, and attitude instead of locking them into a predefined EDF recruit. Its weapon and armor systems feel more structured than the looser progression of older series installments, giving repeated missions a reason to revisit as stronger equipment becomes available. The action lacks the pristine precision of a major military shooter, yet the sheer scale of its battles makes that roughness part of the charm. Fans of EDF 5, Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon, or co-op horde shooters will find plenty to enjoy, especially with friends, while newcomers should expect a deliberately over-the-top campaign rather than a polished tactical shooter.
