The mood is colourful and energetic rather than grim, with neon skies, chunky vehicles, and explosive set pieces that recall the early 3D era without simply imitating it. Ex-Zodiac is built around immediate action: fly in, evade overwhelming fire, and blast a path toward another dramatic showdown.

Each stage moves Kyuu through a predetermined flight route, letting the game focus on aiming, movement, target priority, and survival instead of open-world navigation. Enemies arrive in formations, ground defenses fill the screen with projectiles, and bosses demand that players recognize attack patterns while exploiting brief openings. Barrel rolls add a crucial defensive maneuver, giving tense bullet patterns a satisfying escape tool when standard strafing is not enough. Analogue control is the ideal fit for smooth precision, especially with an Xinput-compatible pad, although keyboard and D-pad play remain supported and inputs can be remapped to suit different setups.
