Its mood is cyberpunk without the neon glamour: dirty, funny, skeptical of authority, and deeply invested in the texture of old-school computing. The story unfolds through the pages of the fictional TRASH WORLD NEWS magazine, which doubles as both tutorial manual and a sharply written piece of worldbuilding.

Each assignment asks you to write instructions for small autonomous programs called EXAs, directing them to move through network nodes, read and alter files, communicate with one another, and escape cleanly. Early jobs teach basic movement, copying data, and conditional logic, while later contracts demand parallel processing, self-replicating viruses, hostile agent encounters, and tightly optimized routines. Problems usually allow several valid solutions, so finishing a mission is only the beginning for players who want to reduce execution cycles, instruction count, or the number of EXAs used. The learning curve is demanding but carefully structured, and the in-game magazine explains concepts with more personality than most programming tutorials.

What makes EXAPUNKS exceptional is how it makes low-level coding feel tactile and rebellious rather than academic.
