Rather than following the familiar story of William Adams, Expeditions: Samurai builds an alternate-history role-playing campaign around your own rise from foreign outsider to a figure with real influence. Political alliances, ruthless warlords, and a crew full of competing motives give the adventure a tense, character-driven feel. The tone balances historical drama with the scrappy danger of leading armed sailors through an unfamiliar country where one poor decision can cost lives.

You create Captain Flynn, lead the frigate De Albatros’s crew, take contracts, investigate conflicts, and decide whose interests deserve your support. Conversations shape relationships and major story branches, while trusted companions reveal personal quests, potential romances, grudges, and reasons to question your leadership. Battles use turn-based tactical rules but emphasize fluid positioning, simultaneous actions, reactions, ambushes, and smart use of terrain rather than static cover-to-cover exchanges. Stealth, split-team deployment, distractions such as firecrackers, Japanese and European weapons, crafted gear, and adjustable character loadouts offer several approaches to difficult encounters.

Its strongest feature is how closely its tactical layer supports the narrative: a choice made during a negotiation can change who joins a fight, what resources you possess, or whether a later mission even unfolds the same way. Drop-in, drop-out co-op adds an unusual wrinkle, allowing a second player to control Flynn’s twin and even argue for dialogue outcomes or pursue the same companion’s loyalty. Coordinated stealth kills and synchronized tactical maneuvers make multiplayer more than a simple extra body on the battlefield. Players who enjoy the consequential writing of The Banner Saga or the squad management of Shadowrun will find plenty to like, while newcomers should be ready for a deliberate RPG that rewards planning, patience, and commitment to difficult choices.
