A ruined version of Tokyo becomes the stage for a distinctly odd JRPG in which romantic bonding is also a literal survival mechanic. EXSTETRA follows high-schooler Ryoma after Tokyo collides with the fantasy realm of Amazea, leaving both worlds on a path toward extinction. Chosen as a Prisma, he must locate fellow survivors and awaken them as warriors through kisses that transfer supernatural energy. The premise is unapologetically anime-styled, but beneath its fan-service angle sits a surprisingly bleak adventure through distorted versions of places such as Shibuya and Akihabara.

Dungeon crawling drives most of the action, sending a four-person party through monster-filled labyrinths packed with treasure, crafting materials, obstacles, and route-blocking mechanisms. Combat uses traditional turn-based commands, with front and rear positions mattering as much as skill selection, so party composition becomes important against tougher enemy groups. Ryoma gathers EXS energy from defeated foes, then shares it with allies to unlock their combat potential and trigger powerful EXS Arts. Weapons, armor, and accessories contribute skills that can be combined through an enchanting system, while relationship growth improves how companions perform alongside one another; an auto-battle option helps speed through routine encounters.

Its strongest hook is the way character affection, resource management, and special attacks all connect to the kiss-based awakening system rather than existing as disconnected JRPG subsystems. Amazea’s decayed, otherworldly Tokyo imagery gives the journey more character than a generic medieval fantasy setting, especially for players who enjoy surreal urban ruins. EXSTETRA feels like a compact, old-school handheld-era RPG: expect menu-driven battles, steady equipment upgrades, and a story built around a colorful party rather than an open-world sandbox. It suits fans of games such as Persona’s urban atmosphere or dungeon-focused JRPGs, provided they are comfortable with melodramatic anime storytelling and its overtly suggestive central gimmick.
