A ruined city becomes a volatile sandbox where shambling undead are only half the danger. Extra Lives blends zombie survival with the unpredictable social chaos of rival human factions, each character carrying their own loyalties, grudges, and ideas about rebuilding civilization. Its rough-edged, stylized 2D presentation and real-time structure give the apocalypse a strangely playful tone, even when a routine scavenging trip turns into a street brawl or a desperate escape. Rather than following a tightly scripted campaign, it lets every day produce its own messy stories.

Survival revolves around moving through dozens of city locations, finding useful gear, managing your condition, and deciding who is worth helping or avoiding. Combat uses the grappling-heavy framework familiar from wrestling games, so fights involve punches, kicks, throws, disarms, and brutal improvised weapon attacks instead of simple button-mashing gunplay. Nearly every encounter can escalate: zombies swarm, civilians intervene, faction wars spill across districts, and valuable objects become tools for defense or crafting. Players can create a survivor, alter the wider cast, adjust the opening zombie population, and shape the difficulty from a relatively gradual outbreak to immediate carnage; Deathmatch mode removes much of the survival pressure for pure combat experimentation.

What separates Extra Lives from more polished zombie games is its willingness to let systems collide without trying to keep events tidy. Hundreds of named characters and eight competing groups create emergent alliances, betrayals, rescues, and absurd disasters that feel closer to a playable apocalypse simulator than a conventional action game. The controls and visuals retain the unmistakably eccentric feel of a mobile-born indie production, so newcomers should expect some clumsiness and a learning curve rather than seamless refinement. Fans of MDickie’s Wrestling Empire, State of Decay’s social unpredictability, or sandbox games that value bizarre player-made stories over polish are likely to get the most from it.
