Between stages, the Intermission menu supports meaningful squad management: equipment, skills, upgrades, and character synergies let players tailor a team around reliable favorites or experiment with powerful combinations. Animated combat sequences give every sword strike, barrage, laser, and finishing move the theatrical flair expected from Touhou, while selectable difficulty and detailed tutorials make the systems easier to learn without flattening their strategic depth.

Its clearest inspiration is the Super Robot Wars style of tactical RPG, but the focus on Touhou’s enormous cast and bullet-hell-flavored special attacks gives the formula a personality of its own. Rather than demanding encyclopedic series knowledge, the campaign includes reference material for characters and setting terms, so newcomers have a practical way to understand Gensokyo’s factions and recurring concepts. A music room with a huge selection of tracks also rewards players who enjoy Touhou’s celebrated arrangements as much as its battles.
