Farlight Commanders (v1.0)

A battered destroyer becomes the Council’s last credible answer to a corporation that rules much of the galaxy through conquest and resource extraction. Farlight Commanders casts players as the crew of the aging Cantharis, a cheap but dependable warship pulled back into service for a campaign to free occupied planets. Its setting carries a scrappy, underdog tone: the rebellion has limited political support, outdated hardware, and little room for mistakes. Rather than portraying galactic war as a one-person power fantasy, it focuses on the frantic work required to keep a single ship and its people alive.

Up to four players share command of the Cantharis in cooperative missions, with each crew member filling a distinct job. The Commander directs the wider operation, Soldiers handle direct defense and fighting, Medics keep injured allies functional, and Technicians maintain the vessel when its systems begin to fail. Battles are as much about reacting to internal damage as facing external threats, since separate sections of the ship can break down and demand immediate repairs before a manageable crisis becomes a total loss. Successful crews communicate, prioritize urgent problems, and balance their individual duties instead of simply chasing kills.

The strongest idea here is its division of responsibility: every player has a practical role in a shared spaceship rather than acting as an interchangeable gunner. The obsolete Cantharis also gives the game a useful identity, turning its limitations into part of the tension and reinforcing the story’s improvised counteroffensive. Players who enjoy the crew coordination and emergency-management pressure of co-op space games such as FTL or the shipboard chaos of Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime should find its premise appealing, especially with a regular group of friends. Solo-minded players may get less from the role-based design, but a coordinated four-person crew is clearly where Farlight Commanders is meant to shine.
