What separates Freedom Finger from the average retro shooter is how naturally its melee mechanics alter the rhythm of play: every encounter asks whether to destroy an enemy safely or seize it for a more useful weapon. The hand-drawn presentation looks like a manic Saturday-morning cartoon, while the soundtrack, including contributions from Aesop Rock, matches its strange comic-book energy. It has the immediate readability of R-Type or Gradius, but the grab-and-pummel system gives it a much more aggressive, hands-on feel.
