Avalice faces an alien invasion, and its best defense comes from three young heroines who fight with far more personality than conventional platform mascots. Freedom Planet is a fast, colorful 2D action-platformer built around momentum, explosive set pieces, and stages that reward both quick reflexes and curiosity. Its bright cartoon presentation recalls the 16-bit era, but the story carries real stakes as the Dragon Valley kingdom struggles against Lord Brevon’s mechanized army. The mood stays energetic and playful even when giant robots, collapsing ruins, and military invasions raise the pressure.

Players choose between Lilac, Carol, and Milla, each of whom changes how levels flow. Lilac attacks with her prehensile hair, spins through enemies, and uses a high-speed dragon boost to cross gaps or break into alternate routes; Carol brawls at close range and rides summoned motorcycles along walls; Milla creates blocks, shields herself, and manipulates objects with more puzzle-oriented abilities. Stages combine classic running and jumping with enemy encounters, bosses, hazards, secrets, collectibles, and branching paths rather than forcing every character through the same solutions. Combat is more involved than simply bouncing on foes, with health bars, special moves, defensive options, and demanding boss patterns that encourage players to learn attack timing.

What separates Freedom Planet from many retro-inspired platformers is how confidently it mixes Sonic-like speed with beat-’em-up combat and distinct character toolkits. Levels are packed with visual variety, from lush forests and icy peaks to underwater facilities and industrial war zones, while the hand-drawn sprites and animated dialogue give Avalice a strong identity. Multiple playable heroes, optional exploration, time-attack appeal, and higher difficulties provide good reasons to replay campaigns after the first clear. Anyone who enjoys Sonic Mania, Mega Man, or fast arcade platformers with substantial boss fights finds plenty to like here, although newcomers should expect a tougher, more combat-heavy ride than its cheerful art style suggests.
