Orbital elevators burn above a fractured 22nd-century Earth, turning a familiar mech-war setting into a fast, cinematic third-person shooter. Front Mission Evolved follows engineer Dylan Ramsey after a devastating attack on a U.C.S. space elevator pulls him into a widening conflict with the O.C.U. Political suspicion, military cover-ups, and shifting alliances give the campaign a more serious science-fiction tone than its explosive action initially suggests. Rather than commanding units from above, players climb directly into a Wanzer, the series’ hulking combat mech, and fight on the front line.

Combat centers on mobile, over-the-shoulder firefights across cities, industrial sites, deserts, and orbital installations. Wanzers can boost through the air, dash between cover, fire machine guns and missiles, and slash enemies apart at close range; damaged arms, legs, and weapons can also be targeted to cripple an opponent’s options. Missions are largely linear, but the hangar supplies meaningful customization through interchangeable body parts, weapons, paint schemes, and loadouts that let players build a durable brawler, a missile platform, or a more agile gunfighter. Difficulty can spike during boss encounters and crowded battles, so managing positioning, boosts, and weapon cooldowns matters more than simply spraying ammunition.

The biggest distinction is its attempt to translate Front Mission’s tactical mech identity into immediate action without abandoning the satisfaction of assembling a personalized machine. It lacks the deep squad strategy and branching political routes of the classic turn-based entries, and its story sometimes leans heavily on genre clichés, but the Wanzer combat has real weight and the customization remains engaging throughout. Multiplayer modes add competitive mech battles where loadout choices become even more important, though the solo campaign is the main attraction. Fans of Armored Core’s garage tinkering, MechWarrior’s metal-on-metal warfare, or Vanquish’s brisk sci-fi shooting find plenty to enjoy, especially if they want a straightforward, action-first mech campaign rather than a demanding simulation.
